Mike Costa has lived his whole life in The Strip, Pittsburgh's warehouse and factory district. His father's large Italian family runs a food wholesale business, and Mike is used to the sounds and smells of men working all night to unload the trains that feed the city. But it's 1933, and the Depression is bringing tough times to everyone. Money problems only add to Mike's worries about his beloved grandfather, who is getting forgetful and confused.
Mike is being tormented at school by a loud-mouth named Andy Simms, who calls Mike "Macaroni Boy." But when dead rats start appearing in the streets, that name changes to "Rat Boy." Around the same time Mike notices that his grandfather is also physically sick. Can whatever is killing the rats be hurting Mike's grandfather? It's a mystery Mike urgently needs to solve in this atmospheric, fast-paced story filled with vibrant period detail.
The Marvel of Maps: Art, Cartography, and Politics in Renaissance Italy
Among the most beautiful and compelling works of Renaissance art, painted maps adorned the halls and galleries of princely palaces. This book is the first to discuss in detail the three-dimensional display of these painted map cycles and their full meaning in Renaissance culture.
Art historian Francesca Fiorani focuses on two of the most significant and marvelous surviving Italian map murals--the Guardaroba Nuova of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, commissioned by Duke Cosimo de' Medici, and the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII. Both cycles were not only pioneering cartographic enterprises but also powerful political and religious images. Presenting an original interpretation of the interaction between art, science, politics, and religion in Renaissance culture, the book also offers fresh insights into the Medici and papal courts.

Italian Baroque Sculpture by Bruce Boucher, ISBN 0500203075
The sculptural flowering of the Italian Baroque - the sensuous beauty of Bernini's Apollo and Daphne; the spectacular papal tombs in St. Peter's; dramatic altarpieces such as the mystical Ecstasy of St. Teresa; and Rome's dazzling fountains - boldly transcended the traditional limitations of artistic media. Often dismissed in the past for creating a sham world to distract the observer's attention with dazzling technical displays, the sculpture of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italy is here reassessed for the first time in more than a generation. Published to coincide with the fourth centenary of the births of Bernini and Algardi, the greatest of Baroque sculptors, Bruce Boucher's book provides an invaluable critical survey of Italian Baroque sculpture.

Shop Talk: A Writer and His Colleagues and Their Work by Philip Roth, ISBN 0375714138
In Philip Roth's intimate intellectual encounters with an international and diverse cast of writers, they explore the importance of region, politics and history in their work and trace the imaginative path by which a writer's highly individualized art is informed by the wider conditions of life.
With Primo Levi, Roth discusses the stubborn core of rationality that helped the Italian chemist-writer survive the demented laboratory of Auschwitz. With Milan Kundera, he analyzes the mix of politics and sexuality that made him the most subversive writer in communist Czechoslovakia. With Edna O'Brien, he explores the circumstances that have forced generations of Irish writers into exile. Elsewhere Roth offers appreciative portraits of two friends--the writer Bernard Malamud and the painter Philip Guston--at the end of their careers, and gives us a masterful assessment of the work of Saul Bellow. Intimate, charming, and crackling with ideas about the interplay between imagination and the writer's...

Alamein to Tunis: The Eighth Army's in North Africa by Adrian Turner, ISBN 0850526663
The British victory at El Alamein in November, 1942, while a decisive turning point in the war, did not immediately lead to the collapse of Axis forces in North Africa. While much depleted, the Afrika Korps escaped from the El Alamein battlefield in good order and fell back on strong defensive positions in Tunisia, bolstered by some of the world's most difficult terrain. German paratroopers and Hermann Goring Division panzergrenadiers were sent to North Africa as reinforcements, Italian units were more capable in the defensive role, and Montgomery could not be sure of the loyalty of Germany's nominal Vichy French allies.
Not even the creation of a second front in North Africa with the arrival of the Americans and fresh British units was enough to dislodge the Axis forces. The author describes in detail the hard campaigning and desperate battles that were necessary to bring about final victory in North Africa. A full description is given of the often-neglected air aspect of the campaign....

The World of Biedermeier by Linda Chase, ISBN 0500510555
Biedermeier furniture and interior design are recognized today as the first great flowering of haute bourgeois taste in interior design. Biedermeier is a style with great range, from austere to sumptuous, but it is never ostentatious in its celebration of comfort, domestic intimacy, and practicality. Beginning in the early nineteenth century, these bourgeois ideals in design were pursued by a wide range of society from the Hapsburgs and Hohenzollern to the middle class, from Middle Europe to Italy, yet Biedermeier's innate classicism, its lyrical yet elegant forms, have made it an influential inspiration in our own time.
The World of Biedermeier celebrates the elements of a wonderfully appealing style -- the furniture, decorative elements, paintings, crystal, porcelain, fabrics -- as no other recent book on furniture and design. Created out of an enraptured obsession with Biedermeier -- shared by Karl Kemp, the renowned antiques dealer, and Linda Chase, the noted interior designer and...
